After 20 years of residential and commercial drainage experience, I have very seldom used "French Drains" (perforated pipe surrounded by rock and cloth, usually along side the slab of the house), but instead I recommend "Storm Drains" (solid PVC pipe with catch basins to collect the water, discharging to the street).
