After 20 years of residential and commercial drainage experience, I have very seldom used "French Drains" (perforated pipe surrounded by rock and cloth.) I recommend "Storm Drains" (solid PVC pipe with catch basins to collect the water, discharging to the street) as this has proven to be most effective for the Houston area and is virtually maintenance free.
